Welcome to a new feature to the Eastern Maine RBA website: Podcasts. With the growth of Internet and its instantaneous connection to millions of people, podcasting has become more and more popular, and easier to access. Podcasting allows virtually anyone with a computer to become a disc jockey, talk show host or anything else. Podcasting first became popular with "techies", but has since caught on with the general public. Log on to any of the most popular sites on the Web (MSNBC, CNN, ESPN, MPBN, Podcast.net others), and you can download content consisting of news, opinion, music, philosophy, sports and much more. Podcasting combines the freedom of blogging with digital audio technology to create an almost endless supply of content. Podcasting is a free service that allows Internet users to pull audio files (typically MP3s) from a podcasting website to listen to on their computers or personal digital audio players. The term "podcast" comes from a combination of the words iPod (made by Apple) and broadcasting. But despite that the term is derived from the iPod, you don't need an iPod to listen to a podcast. You can use virtually any portable media player or your computer. You just download the podcast on demand or subscribe via an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed, which automatically downloads the podcast to their computers. So, what will podcasts here sound like? Well, initially, the broadcasts will be pretty simple. A little introductory music with highlights of the broadcast, rabbit-related news from Maine, New England and elsewhere, maybe a feature or two and then the closing. As time goes on, perhaps we can have rabbit-related "how to" and "hot topic" discussions as well as show news from around the state and New England. Certainly, suggestions and comments will be welcome. Broadcasts will probably run between 10-20 minutes in length and available in MP3 format. Additionally, having RSS subscription feeds will help keep visitors current. How often? Probably monthly but perhaps more often during the summer months. What will you need in order to hear EMbunnyCasts? Well, you will need to visit this page and select a broadcast to either listen to it in a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), or download to listen at a later date on your computer with an audio player (Window Media Player, Realplayer, etc.) or MP3 player. Once the first EMBunnyCast is posted, there will be further instructions. Check out "How Stuff Works" to learn more about podcasts
To listen to the above podcasts using your computer and browser, just click on the podcast link and the helper application on your computer should launch automatically (Window's Media Player, Real Audio, QuickTime, or others). To download to listen at your leisure on your computer or portable media player (iPod, Zune, etc.), just right-click the link and then select "Save Link As" (using Firefox) or "Save Target As" (using Internet Explorer). Navigate to a location on your computer where you wish to save the download (Please be aware that the size of podcasts are somewhat large (at least 5 MB) and may take an extended time to download via dial-up).
